Green Team
Congregation Challenge:
Form or revitalize a congregational Green Team (Pastor, Council member, youth member(s), Property Committee, Expert)
Forming a Green Team
The formation of a “Green Team” is the first step in organizing efforts to pursue a more sustainable community. Green teams leverage the skills and expertise of team members to develop plans, implement programs, and assist with educational opportunities that raise community awareness and commitment to sustainability and the care of creation.
A Green Team can go by any name - the important thing is the organizational and motivational role they play in the life of the congregation!
A "Green Team" is a workgroup that works across all ministry areas to increase the sustainability of congregational programs and infrastructure such as building, grounds, equipment, and supplies. Ideally, a green team is composed of the Pastor, one or more Council members, one or more youth member(s), a liaison to the Property Committee, and one or more church members with expertise in sustainability.
Creating a green team is a great way to engage with the Bishop's Sustainability Challenge! The heart of the Green Luther Rose design we're using for the Bishop's Challenge is your congregational Green Team, which will coordinate your congregation's actions.
Note: Social Ministry committees, Fellowship committees, the Congregation Council, etc. can also lead your care of creation action plan and implementation - we want to hear how you organize your congregation's care of creation actions in the way that works for YOU!
Want some inspiration as you form your Green Team? Check out this original graphic novel, Stewards of the Earth, about a Green Team of superheroes! These characters were created by Bishop's Challenge planning group member Rev. Jeffrey Elliott and his brother John Elliott and formed the basis of the skit used to launch the Bishop's Challenge in May 2024.
